Wilcox Mofflin

46- 50 Mountain Street

Ultimo, NSW

The Wilcox Mofflin Project was the conversion of a Federation warehouse into industrial style apartments. Unit 2 (featured right) is a two bedroom apartment, split between levels one and two.

The building is heritage listed, and the apartment itself boasts original double brick walls, concrete flooring, solid timber posts and an exposed ceiling. The client’s aim was to highlight the industrial features of the space, while incorporating their eclectic style and love of art.

Contrasts through texture, form and materials were essential in melding original details with new additions. This was achieved by pairing the harshness of the brick with a softer wall mural, or the clean lines of a concrete tile with the more intricate fluidity of a marble feature tile.

The show stopping feature of this apartment is the custom designed staircase. This piece was designed to draw the eye from every part of the space, both partitioning and linking the entire living area around a central feature. The powder coated steel, and the use of steel mesh is reminiscent of the buildings industrial heritage, while the use of bold colours and form give it it’s post modern aftertaste.

Colour was a high priority for the client due to their extensive art collection. With the collection being predominately bold, abstract pieces, many of the finishes are simple, in order to play to the artworks as a feature. This apartment highlights that simple does not mean boring, as these finishes seamlessly integrate the past with the present, to create the eclectic style the client loved.
